Gigondas ~ France

Located in France’s Southern Rhône, Gigondas produces wines that are rich Grenache-based blends, thanks in part to the region’s Mediterranean climate and red clay-alluvial soils. Under the AOP regulations, only red and rosé wines may be produced; white wines are simply declassified to Côtes-du-Rhône status.

A mandated 50% Grenache is required in the wine, with Mourvèdre and/or Syrah usually accounting for the bulk of the remaining blend—adding structure, savory tones and color intensity to Grenache’s alcoholic power and lush richness. These wines are often compared to the great wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but can even offer better value.

Like Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas is defined by luscious fruit, generosity and spice. It’s typified, however, by a slimmer profile than the brawny wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, as well as an intoxicating pungency of garrigue, the rustic base notes of underbrush and herb found throughout Provence and the South of France.

In 1971, Gigondas was the first of the Côtes du Rhône Villages appellations to be elevated to cru status. The wines offer remarkable affordability compared to ever-escalating prices for Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

A bustling French café welcomes you at the curb with aromas of fresh dew on a sidewalk, sweet tobacco, and tea leaf, all while inviting you inside to try one of the pâtissier decadent damson plum cheesecake bars, drizzled with a warm raspberry compote all framed in by rich vanilla spiced latte’. Drink now, cellar for maximum 5 years. Pair with grilled quail with a plum chipotle sauce.

“Happiness is opening a 2016 Opolo Mountain Zinfandel! Swathed in sumptuous layers of dark berries, sweet smoke, and warm spice notes, it’s just so yummy! Decadent aromas & flavors of grilled plums, black cherries, and spices. The plush palate entices with secondary notes of strawberries, rooibos, new leather, and smoked butterscotch, all beguilingly wreathed in smooth cherry pipe tobacco. At a head-spinning 15.5% alcohol, the effect is unarguably dizzying…a happy-making wine, indeed! (Cheers, Vivinoers!)”

Opolo Vineyards ~ Paso Robles

OUR VINEYARDS

Opolo’s estate vineyards were established from 1994-1996, with sites on both the west and east side of Paso Robles. The topographically diverse, coastal landscape of the westside vineyards provides for an intense and unique flavor profile. The heat and dryness of the east side vineyard make it an ideal microclimate for growing Bordeaux varietals. Home to a wide range of varietals, the estate vineyards help allow the team at Opolo to create many unique single varietals as well as award winning blends.

Most important in making high quality wine is starting with high quality grapes. Opolo’s vineyard team carefully monitors each lot of grapes throughout the season in order to produce the highest quality fruit possible. From taking leaf, petiole, and soil samples, to monitoring water uptake in the vines, all aspects of viticulture is carefully notated and examined with the intent of producing only high quality fruit for our winery. The entire Opolo production team works together every year to provide the best quality product possible.

2016 CHÂTEAU DE BEAUCASTEL

Châteauneuf-du-Pape ~ Chateau of the Pope

The 2016 Château de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape is a simply stunning showing in this vintage. It is composed of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah, 10% Counoise, 5% Cinsault and 10% other allowed varietals, with each harvested separately and manually and aged in oak foudres for a year before being bottled. The result is an absolutely beautiful wine which begins with gorgeous aromas of raspberries and dark cherries which come together with florals, spices, wet stones and grilled herbs all coming together in the glass.

On the palate this is exudes class and refinement, as it possesses a wonderful texture, with a seamless mouthfeel. It continues to thoroughly impress as it displays remarkable overall balance and finesse along with incredible concentration and length. This is already utterly captivating in its youth, however it possesses the characteristics which indicate an incredibly long evolution ahead. This will ultimately become a special vintage for Beaucastel.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a commune in the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region in southeastern France. The village lies about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) to the east of the Rhône and 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) north of the town of Avignon. In the 2012 census the commune had a population of 2,179.

A ruined medieval castle sits above the village and dominates the landscape to the south. It was built in the 14th century for Pope John XXII, the second of the popes to reside in Avignon.

Almost all the cultivable land is planted with grapevines. The commune is famous for the production of red wine classified as Châteauneuf-du-Pape Appellation d’origine contrôlée which is produced from grapes grown in the commune of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and in portions of four adjoining communes.
