AAPL my Favorite Fruit

Apple said it would enact a 4-for-1 split on August 24, meaning that each share owned by an investor today will turn into four shares. At the same time, Apple’s stock price will be quartered, from about $400 now to about $100 when the split happens.

On Apple’s call, CFO Luca Maestri disclosed that more than 75% of June quarter Apple Watch purchases, and roughly half of the quarter’s iPad and Mac purchases, were first-time buyers.

Separately, Tim Cook indicated that the iPhone SE, which was refreshed in April, both provided a major boost to June quarter iPhone sales and is generating a larger portion of its sales from Android users than it was a year ago.

5G in 2020

At CES, the big consumer electronics show in Las Vegas this week, the carriers are insisting that 2020 will be a turning point for 5G. AT&T and Verizon say they expect their 5G networks to be accessible nationwide this year. In addition, the carriers say at least 15 smartphones will be 5G compatible this year, more than triple the number last year.

In the simplest terms, 5G is a new cellular standard. Phone carriers have jumped to a new wireless standard roughly every decade. About 10 years ago, 4G, the fourth-generation network, arrived with significantly faster speeds and stronger reliability than 3G. About a decade before that, 3G arrived and was much faster and more robust than 2G.

There are two versions of 5G to look at
The much-hyped, ultrafast variant of 5G is known as “millimeter wave,” It lets carriers transmit data at incredibly fast speeds — the kind that would let you download an entire movie in a few seconds.

Instead, this year our cellular networks will broadly shift to a version of 5G that is less exciting. Will have speeds that are only slightly faster than current 4G networks. The main benefit will be a reduction of lag known as latency.

Snap Nears 8-Month High as Platform Changes, Tech IPO Surge, Boosts Shares

Snap Inc. (SNAP – Get Report) shares opened at the highest level in nearly eight months Monday as investors pile back into the instant messaging app service group’s stock following a rebound in tech sector sentiment amid a surge in new listings.

Snap, which reports first quarter earnings on April 23, has impressed investors of late with plans to broaden the advertizing reach of its messaging platform to the 186 million people who use it each day, rolling out new games, photographic options and original content programming. Last week, Snap’s first-ever ‘Partner Summit’ in Los Angeles unveiled some of those changes, which it hopes will lengthen engagement times and lever value from the near 90% market share of 13 to 24 year olds it commands in the United States.
